Finishing Level III Team Member

Position Title: Finishing Level III Team Member – 3rd shift
FLSA Classification: Non-exempt
Department: Finishing
Reports to: Area Manager

 

POSITION PURPOSE/MISSION:  Set-up, program, operate and maintain various production equipment.  Performing fixturing and inspection per J&L policies and procedures to create a product meeting customer specification.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to produce quality parts for our customers
  • Report safety issues when they occur, or unsafe conditions
  • Participate in the Behavior-based safety program as required
  • Report quality related problems to team members and team lead; and help troubleshoot issue.
  • Run machines to include: VMP, blast machine, high speed and creep feed grinder and horizontal machining center
  • Utilize height gauge, micrometer, caliper, pin gauge, thread gauge and feeler for inspection of parts
  • Utilize fork truck for material handling
  • Complete product inspection and required paperwork/forms of completion
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Melt Team Member

Position Title: Melt Team Member – 2nd Shift
FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

POSITION PURPOSE/MISSION:  To interact in a team environment placing molds onto pouring tray to prepare for pouring, prepare furnace for melting, charge furnaces and melt metals required for pouring.  Prepare ladles for pouring of metals and create castings.  To be accomplished through cross training in the following areas within the department; Furnace Reline Operation, Furnace Operation, TruFlow Operation, Charge Operation, Ladle Reline Operation, and Pouring Operation.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures in place to produce quality parts for our customers
  • Report safety issues when they occur, or unsafe conditions
  • Participate in the Behavior-based safety program as required
  • Complete required process documentation, such as routing cards down time logs, etc
  • Report quality related problems to team members and team lead; and help troubleshoot issue
  • Set-up molds for preparation on the TruFlow
  • Work on planning production requirements (i.e. materials, time) to ensure most effective methods are utilized
  • Shift weights and push/place pallets
  • Calculation of charge material and total weight
  • Coordinate mold movement into cooling area
  • Sinter, repair and reline furnace
  • Repair and reline ladles
  • Perform furnace and ladle slagout
  • Charge and operate furnace
  • Pour molten metal into molds
  • Operate forklift
  • Provide customer and supplier feedback
  • Versatility in all skills in the Melt Department

  • Follow all safety policies and procedures to produce quality parts for our customers

  • Complete process tracking information such as routing cards, scrap tracker sheets, and downtime logs

  • Set-up and operate computer controlled (automated) machines.
  • Deliver molding equipment to molding machines per scheduled requirements.

Position Title: Mold Team Member – 2nd Shift

The Responsibilities

The Applications Engineer has two major roles:

  • Reactive – Working closely with customers and the sales force through issues of competitive threats, delivering a higher level of technical support in an emergency situation: providing complete systems analysis – being an advanced resource, when a cursory approach is not providing insights necessary to solve problems quickly.
  • Proactive – Look at the customer base, determining where the company’s best products are running and where they are not. Work with the Sales Managers and Sales to develop action plans for new product development, technical support, etc. in order to advance coverage of products and service throughout the customer base.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide the technical expertise to sales plans. Working closely with the Sales Reps, the Applications Engineer will provide plate recommendations to support sales growth.
  • Investigate, research, analyze, and work with mill personnel to recommend solutions to problems, ideas for process improvement, and proper operating procedures for refining systems.
  • Provide responses to problems/opportunities directly related to plate design specification.
  • Advance training and understanding of internal and external customers in the refining process through preparation and presentation of technical papers, seminars, and training sessions.

  • Develop tools to predict and analyze refiner performance resulting in process characteristics.

Experience

The Engineering Technician opportunity is a cross-functional support position that involves interaction with both engineering and manufacturing. In the manufacturing area, the Engineering Technician will be responsible for creating, training, and applying elements of quality system including product inspection and process auditing. In the engineering area, the Engineering Technician will assist designers and modelers by performing reverse engineering and drafting. The Responsibilities

The Position

J&L Fiber Services specializes in the production of parts made with stainless steels, high chrome white irons, and low alloy steels for the several industries requiring tough, wear and corrosion resistant products.  J&L’s manufacturing process can be simplified to 4 steps:

  1. Mold making
  2. Molten metal pouring
  3. Degating and part cleaning
  4. Machining

The Process Engineer role works as a member of the Operations team to deliver improvements in safety, quality, cost and productivity.  They will be required to work cross functionally between the Mold, Melt, Clean, and Finishing departments to ensure these improvements are delivered as intended.  The Process Engineer should have good problem solving skills and be equally comfortable working in the shop, as well as behind the desk analyzing data.

The Responsibilities

The Process Engineer is responsible for defining and measuring process performance in order to optimize and control key parameters necessary for the safe, efficient, and cost effective production of high quality cast parts through the J&L manufacturing processes.  This role requires a solid understanding of the casting process from rigging development, cold box mold making, melt practices, defect characterization, and root cause analysis, as well as general metal removal techniques utilized in the degating and part cleaning areas.  Here are the primary areas of responsibility for J&L’s Process Engineer:

  • Sand reclamation process control (LOI, GFN, etc)
  • Molding process parameter measurement and control
  • Working with Design Engineering to confirm flow and solidification simulation results and manufacturing viability for new and redesigned parts and gating schemes
  • Process capability analysis, development, and troubleshooting for multiple alloys throughout the manufacturing processes
  • Process evaluations and improvement (safety, productivity, and cost) for molding, melt and cleaning related processes, as well as support of machining activities in the back end, as needed.
  • Casting defect analysis and troubleshooting
  • Scrap/rework tracking and reduction project ownership
  • Cradle to grave sample casting process ownership
  • Cost justification for new tools, equipment, processes, and supplies
  • Work instruction development and training support for manufacturing processes

Experience

The ideal candidate would have a Materials Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering degree, with 5+ years of foundry related Process Engineering experience with a heavy focus on rigging development, ISO cure cold box mold making and stainless steel and high chrome white iron melting and pouring, as well as conventional  cleaning room best practices.  The candidate should exhibit most if not all of these characteristics:

  • Proven track record of collecting, analyzing real world data and synthesizing implementable solutions
  • Strong problem solving skills, including the ability to work cross departmentally to facilitate implementation of solutions
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills utilizing pivot tables, v-looks, filtering and sorting, etc in order to track and analyze process, cost and quality data.
  • Strong planning skills in order to minimize the need to fire fight issues
  • Experience using ProCast, Magma, EKK, Flow3d or similar fluid flow & solidification simulation a plus

  2. Working collaboratively with Design Engineering and the Cleaning Room Area Manager make improvements in the process flow or product quality that reduces the span time for parts requiring welding from 1.5 – 3 days to .75 days.
