J&L refiner plates are a customized engineered product—the result of collaboration between several engineering cells within our organization.


Refiner plates are a process improvement tool and J&L Applications Engineering works closely with customers to develop solutions to refining challenges. Included in the solution is most often an upgrade in a refiner plate design or alloy.

The 6 step process involves gathering refiner and system data on the following:

  • Hydraulics – Flow
  • Consistency
  • Specific Energy [kWh/t]
  • Delta CSF/Kwh/t
  • Refining Intensity [WS/M]
  • Plate Material


From concept to reality, J&L’s Custom Engineering Process provides refining solutions through engineering.

Utilizing the vast process knowledge of our sales and applications engineering team, the specific and/or unique needs of the customer are identified and communicated to the design engineering group.

Customer needs are then translated into product features using J&L’s computer modeling capabilities and J&L’s large refiner database. CAD models are created for customer review. Critical designs are analyzed for stress using FEA.

Manufacturing Engineering

Refiner plates start as a precision casting. Designs are verified before starting the manufacturing process using ProCast solidification software. This modeling process predicts manufacturing issues before any tooling is even built. Once approved, a pattern (replica of the refiner plate) is made for production of the custom refiner plate solution. Our manufacturing process ensures that process variables are under control. The parameters identified in the modeling process are transferred by manufacturing engineering to production to lock in the process control.

Our engineering approach not only deals with new designs but also investigates cost reduction opportunities for the customer, weight reduction, manufacturing or reliability improvements.
