The Effect of Production to Venturi’s Energy Savings

Production

The new revolutionary damless Venturi design was made to improve steam flow within the plate gap and to reduce Specific Energy Consumption by:

1) Reducing plate gap pressure and temperature
2) Allowing steeper angle uni-directional bar layout to be used without negative effects to resulting pulp quality
3) Enabling higher production levels to be used for enhanced SEC savings

The damless design feature of the Venturi pattern results in a very low pressure (and temperature) within the plate gap and requires much less force for closing the plates together to reach a given power level (see graph below). Note: Thrust bearing temperature is a measure of closing pressure or hydraulic force required to close the plates.

This low gap pressure feature is even more pronounced when higher production levels are utilized (blue dots in graph above). As a matter of fact, the production level reached with the above trials was not attainable with standard plates.

Pulp Quality & Energy Savings

The Venturi design has shown Specific Energy Savings in previous trials in the range of 8 to 10% for unchanged pulp quality. In this study:

  1. New Venturi plates were run at High TPD (which could not be achieved with standard plates)

  2. New Venturi plates were run at Normal TPD at which the standard plates normally operated for 3 weeks

  3. Standard competitor plates were run at Normal TPD for 3 weeks

  4. Finally, prematurely removed Venturi plates were re-installed for 3 weeks for sampling.

The tables below summarize all the samples collected and the conclusions are shown between the tables.
