Pulp quality has always been an objective in
OCC refining and is a necessary requirement for the pulp being fed to
the paper machine. Many plate patterns are designed in an effort to
fulfill this objective. Even though some patterns achieve the pulp
quality desired, they tend to deliver less than satisfactory plate life.
Plate designs have been created and proven effective in reaching OCC pulp quality
objectives. But due to the inherent aggressive nature of OCC refining,
the plates tend to have short plate life due to groove plugging
from plastics, wood, and miscellaneous debris found in OCC furnish.
In addition, hydraulic capacity can reduce over time
as the refining bars wear down.
Is it possible for mills to achieve quality
objectives without sacrificing plate life?
Most definitely, thanks to advancements made in plate design.
Mills can increase plate life drastically and maintain pulp quality with
J&L's PowerCast™ Technology with ReverseFlare™. It's the best of both
worlds. ReverseFlare consists of anti-plugging grooves and PowerCast
provides a zero degree draft bar angle allowing for a greater amount of
open area and capacity. Plus, PowerCast fillings have taller casted bars
that are strong enough to combat the obstacles of OCC refining. Now,
mills can expect longer plate life while continuing to meet their OCC
pulp quality objectives.
